2007 Workers' Memorial Monument Dinner

On Wednesday, May 3rd, the Westchester/Putnam Central Labor Body, AFL-CIO and friends in the community honored Representative Nita Lowey for her outstanding public service and Michael Carriere for his labor service at the Workers' Memorial Fundraising Event.

The Westchester/Putnam Central Labor Body raised money to erect a Workers' Memorial Monument that will honor all workers who have died on the job. Westchester County has agreed to donate the property for the monument which will serve as a constant reminder that we need to maintain and increase safety protections at the workplace. The monument will allow the WPCLB to permanently honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice-their lives- to support their families.

At the event, Congresswoman Nita Lowey received the "Outstanding Public Service Award" for her never ending fight for a better America for all. No matter what the issue Nita has been a vocal advocate for what she believes in and is always on top of the issues. She is cognizant of health and safety issues and knows the importance of worker training, OSHA funding, etc. She has always been on the frontline for workers and led the fight for training and equipment for first responders, the right of representation, a living wage, good housing and health care for all and the protections of social security.

Michael Carriere, Business Representative of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades Local 113 of DC #9 was awarded the "Labor Service Award." As a union member Michael has always fought for the right of workers to organize and stand united in a workplace that is both healthy and safe. Michael believes strongly in the importance of community service and has initiated a number of projects here in Westchester. He has encouraged his union members to volunteer for important service projects such as redoing more than eighty rooms at the Westchester Medical Center and the Maria Ferrari Children's Hospital; painting the Slater Center of White Plains; painting the auditorium, kitchen, etc. at St.Peter's Episcopal Church in Port Chester; and being involved in the "Extreme Home Makeover" for the Arena Family. His latest project, for which he has also recruited the Plumbers Union, UA # 21 and the Resilient Floor Cover Local # 2287, is doing over the YMCA in White Plains.
