Organizing is a Human Right Rally

Hundreds of people rallied in support of UNITE Westchester United Cerebral Palsy workers in front of the Westchester County Legislature in White Plains. The theme of the rally was "Organizing is a Human Right" and the response of politicians, religious leaders, union members, client families, community activists and clergy was overwhelming. They came out to tell the management of UCP that it is wrong for working families to live in poverty.

Keynote speeches were made by New York State AFL-CIO President Denis Hughes and presidential candidate Rev. Al Sharpton. Both called on the UCP management to treat the workers fairly and promised to stand behind the workers. Also pledging their support of the workers were County Legislators Lois Bronz, Clinton Young, Jose Alvarado, Bill Ryan and Vito Pinto. White Plains Councilmen Ben Boykin and Robert Greer also added their support.

Union members came from all over to support their union brothers and sisters.

Among those were members of IBEW # 3,CWA # 1103, Yonkers Federation of Teachers AFT # 860, IATSE # 1, Mount Vernon Firefighters IAFF # 107, OPEIU #153; HERE, SEIU # 32BJ, Westchester Community College Federation of Teachers AFT Local 2431 and Teamsters # 817. Members also came from locals as far away as Hartford Connecticut.

All at the rally pledged to stand behind the workers as long as it takes to get them a fair contract.
