Yonkers Firefighters, IAFF # 628 surprised the striking workers at the Domino Sugar House in Yonkers with a barbeque. Lou Vellucci and Pat Brady organized the event and were accompanied by numerous Yonkers Firefighters who came to show their support for their fellow union brothers and sisters. The food was great and the workers were happy to see they had not been forgotten.

Overlooking the barbeque was the management rat protecting the bosses and telling Domino that union workers do not like the way they are being treated. The situation has worsened since Domino workers were locked out in May 2, 2005.

PLEASE HELP

Local 1814 of the International Longshoremen's Association, AFL-CIO members have been on strike at the Domino Sugar House in Yonkers since December 20, 2004 and are in need of our help.

In a news release issued by ILA Local 1814 it was stated:

"ILA union workers were asking for modest increases in their wages and improvements in pension and welfare benefits, according to Louis Pernice, President of ILA Local 1814 and the union's chief negotiator.

The ILA sugar workers rejected the company's final offer on Dec. 19th which called for a lump sum payment of $750 as an increase for the first year of a new contract with increases of only two percent in the contracts in 2006 and 2007."

"The company's offer of a raise of $750 for the first year of the contract actually translates into an increase of about 36 cents an hour," said Mr. Pernice. "You couldn't even buy a pound of their sugar with that increase. It's an insulting offer and I don't blame the members for rejecting it and striking over it."

On Friday, February 25th, members of the Westchester-Putnam Central Labor Body collected and distributed food to striking ILA members in Yonkers in coordination with Yonkers Community Action Program and Food Patch.

Two mailings were sent out of the offices of the Westchester-Putnam Central Labor Council containing food coupons for the striking workers. One mailing was paid for by the WPCLB, and one came out of the ILA strike fund.

ILA 1814 members attempted to return to work, with blessing of the Union, on Tuesday May 3, 2005 while negotiations continued. Union officials were notified by company management that they were "locked out" thus prempting any attempts for the workers to get a paycheck. Unfair Labor Practice charges against the company are being discussed by ILA leadership.
